“The future of mobile display technology.”
January 15, 2019
This project started 8 years ago and was just a prototype now, they’re releasing it to the public. Samsung is using a technology called Infinity Flex Display, a phone that can transform into a tablet.
The closest thing that Samsung got to a flexible phone was an incurved phone named Galaxy Round. Back in 2013 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the South Korean company presented “Youm” a bendable screen using plastic instead of glass and was almost unbreakable, but none of these phones were commercialized.
The Galaxy F will equip a 512GB storage, a dual-sim support and a curved 6000mAh battery which provides 18 hours of video playback, 51 hours of talk time and about one month of standby. It should have three 3.5 inch OLED displays, one for the phone and the two others for the tablet.
Samsung said that the phone will first be launched in the first half of 2019 and at least one million units should be produced. One of Samsung display engineers explains “The bezel-free display currently sells well, we still have enough time to develop foldable display. The technology is expected to be mature around 2019.”
Samsung isn’t the only company in the race for the commercializing of the first foldable screen. LG is already making a bendable handset and Huawei CEO put themselves in the race saying: “We are working on foldable phones. Foldable 5G phones.” And another company named Royole is about to win the race with their phone : the FlexPai.
Some rumors says that the phone should be released in december or early 2019 at a very high starting price 2460 $(CAD) as it might be only EE exclusive in the United Kingdom.
