A True Prowess

After only one year, the skaters of la Camaradière could ride in their new skatepark.

Geneviève Maheux, a young and energetic leisure technician from La Camaradière, started working on this project at the beginning of december 2015.

She did not work alone on the skatepark; she got help not only from the students, but also from the city. This partnership with the city reduced the cost for the school. At the cost of 25 000 dollars, these brand new modules were paid and installed by the city and the fresh asphalt was paid by the schoolboard.

After seeing the final product, Geneviève and the kids are happy about the results, but some young skaters thought they could have more structures with the 25 000$ given by the city. “It’s really nice but the half pipe is really short” said William Vezina.

Though there aren’t many rules in the skatepark, there are some that are important for the security of users. For helmets, people are not obligated to wear one, but if they hurt themselves, the school is not responsible and the athletes are not covered by any insurance from the establishment.

Scooters and bmx users are allowed and do not have any more restrictions than skaters. People who want to use the new park at night can, but they won’t have any lamp to light up their path.

Genevieve reminded us that there are still two spots available for the skateboard class, which takes place on Wednesday and Friday. Helmets are mandatory for those lessons.
