Following the article on the seventh continent, we have learned that our oceans are dangerously polluted. Two Australians may have found a way to reduce the quantity of plastic in our oceans.

So, how to clean the oceans?

One of the many solutions is the Seabin project. A new invention made by two surfers named: Andrew Turton and Pete Ceglinski. It will certainly make our future better. These garbage bins of the sea did great when tested, and their creators want to mass produce them.

So how does it works?

The bin is attached to the deck of marinas, ports, sailing clubs, or even on boats. The opening of the bin will be near the surface, because that’s where most of the waste is. The bin is linked with a pump that slowly sucks in the nearing water with all the debris. In the bin, there is a filter bag that was specially engineered by the two inventors. It captures: plastic bags, solid objects, oil, and other liquids. Then, the pollution free water is returned to the sea by the pump.

The maintenance of this bin isn’t a big job. Each time the bin is filled, a marina employee just has to change the bag with a hook a replace it rapidly with a new one. Then the filled bag can be cleaned of its content. All the detritus will be recycled to create new products. If the bin isn’t cleaned when it is full that’s not a big problem because all the waste will be stuck along on the side of the bin, and will easily be captured with a net.

The environmental impact of this bin isn’t big because  fish can’t be sucked in the bin. The sucking power is too low for the fish to be trapped in the stream. But, if they are trapped for some reasons, they will not be killed, since they’ll just be caught in the filter bag. They will be freed eventually.

The inventors got the idea when they were surfing near a marina, and saw that there were  lots of garbage in the water. They thought that if we don’t take the problem to the source, that is all the coastal and marine installations, the pollution will never end in our seas.

Their goal is to make an ocean that is pollution free. To achieve this, they went to the raising found site Indiegogo and by donations they gathered 21000$. That is 9% of their 230000$ goal to be able to industrialize the bin. If they reach this objective  they will start the production and commercialize the bin.

The only drawback of the Seabin project is that it doesn’t really clean the pollution that is far from the coast. So, we will need another solution to clean the rest of the oceans.

With that new kind of invention, maybe there is hope to have pollution free oceans.
