Finally Justice for Floyd
March 30, 2021
On March 8, 2021, the trial opened for Derek Chauvin, the policeman who is accused of causing George Floyd’s death on May 25, 2020.
The day before the proceeding, the crowd walked around the building where the trial is to take place to manifest. The building has been locked up for fear of an eventual flood by the crowd. During the cortege, some people said that they feared that the 44-year-old man would get out of the trial free and said that if this happened there would be some consequences.
Billie Jean Vanknight, a 43-year-old black woman said “ I wish that the legal system will permit to present all the evidence and that he will be convicted.” She also said, “If he is not recognized responsible, I want more people in the streets to manifest.”
Because of the big public interest, the lawsuit will be filmed and broadcast live in the United-States. The accusations will be presented first. The prosecution will try to prove that the officer had the “intention” to hurt the victim and that it was not only some kind of neglect. For that, they will show the video of the drama that points to the fact that even if Floyd has passed out Chauvin keeps his knee on the man’s throat. The three other officers that were there the day where Floyd died will also be judged together in August. For the defence, the lawyers of Derek will complain that the actions that he took were the ones that he learned in his formation according to CNN.
Derek Chauvin is accused of “murder” and “ manslaughter”. His trial started on March 8, 2021, for jury selection, but the verdict is not expected before late April. The three other officers that were there the day Floyd died will be judged together in August. They are accused of complicity in the tragedy that caused the biggest mobilization of antiracist protests in the United-States since the civil rights movement in 1960.
