Black Lives Matter
April 21, 2021
The famous hashtag Black Lives Matters was created by 3 women because they were highly affected by all the racial discrimination in the US.
The black lives matter is a social movement that got created in 2013
The main goal for this movement is to sensibilize and protest against any type of racial discrimination.
On July 13, of the same year, a neighborhood guard (Goerge Zimmerman), was acquitted by the justice system, because he killed a black teenager (Tayron martin),during an altercation.
The day of this tragedy, the activist, Alicia Garza, wrote a post on her Facebook. She described the post as a “love letter to black friends”. It ended with “Black People. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter.”
Patrisse Cullors, a friend of Alicia and also an activist, reposted the post on Twitter and added the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter
After that, Alicia anr Patrisse recruited Opal Tometi, another afro-american woman who heads an African-descendant immigrant rights group in New York. Together they manage multiple accounts on social media where they explain why “black lives matter”. the chiefs executives officers (ceo) of the movement started to use the slogan in demonstrations and it quickly expanded to a national movement
Another disaster helped to promote the movement is the death of the football player, George Floyd (2020) and Eric Garner (2014) a father of 6 children clamming “ I can’t breathe” to the police officers that hold them to the ground. After those tragedies people start to mention the last words of the two men, “I can’t breathe” during manifestations.
