March 16, 2023
Two children were killed, on February 8, in their Daycare center situated in Laval, rammed by a bus driver in crisis who voluntarily rushed into the building.
Tragically , seven children aged four to five and an adult were transported in the hospital. The death of one of them occurred at the scene and another died at the hospital within the hours following the incident.
The bus was halfway into the building which caused children to be stuck under it crying, screaming and trying to get out, the events were more than tragic for the families living in the neighborhood Ste-Rose, where the accident took place.
Citizens around the daycare during the events saw multiple parents driving or even running in the direction of the edifice to go save not only their children but their comrades too. ”Everyone was going towards the accident, there was a lot of action. I saw a dad trying to get out with his children in his arms,” explained Aurélie Laprade, a mother.
Even if their sons or daughters were already out of danger, the parents were showing a lot of empathy and were still trying to help the families that were struggling. Lets not forget that the girls and boys who were attending this daycare became close so even if a majority of those who were their don’t have physical injuries, they still need to go trough a grief and to live with the images of the horrible accident rooted in their minds. “Tonight, he will not know that he has lost his best friend,” said Mr. Courtois.
Shocked, bereaved residents paid tribute to the children affected by the tragedy by placing bouquets of flowers and stuffed animals on the hoods of police cars surrounding the crime scene.
The man who committed the crime faces nine counts: two of first degree murder, one of attempted murder, two of aggravated assault and four of assault causing bodily harm. The motive that laid the STL driver to rush into the building remain unknown.
