Famous French actor Gérard Depardieu, who is notorious for his role as Obélix, was accused of sexual assault by multiple French actresses.
Emmanuelle, who in 2019 accused Gérard of sexually assaulting her on the set of the 1982 film Danton, died on December 6 after a week of hospitalization because of a suicide attempt. That was just the day before her allegations against him were re-aired on French television.
Hélène Darras, another French actress, had lodged a police complaint against him during the filming of Diso in 2008. The complaint was dismissed due to the statute of limitations, which is six years in France.
Darras was one of 13 women who accused him of separate incidents of sexual harassment or assault. Variety magazine said, however, there are no women, to this day, whose testimonies are confirmed by witnesses giving solid evidence to the judge.
Although Depardieu didn’t mention names, he talked about the sexual assault allegations against him in the French outlet Le Figaro and expressed he has “never, ever abused a woman.”
“I can no longer allow what I hear or what I have read about myself for several months. I thought I didn’t care, but no, actually no. This all gets to me. Worse still, it wipes me out,” he wrote, in the outlet.
He was also charged with raping the French actress Charlotte Arnould back in 2018. His lawyer had said that the actor denies any sexual attack. The case was closed in 2019 due to a lack of evidence. It later reopened in 2020, where he was again charged with sexual assault, which he again denied.
