Curry vs Ionescu Competiton
March 20, 2024
The Golden State star and NBA’s all-time 3-point king, Stephen Curry, beat Sabrina Ionescu 29-26 in the Steph vs. Sabrina competition at All-Star Saturday night.
On Saturday, February 17 at 8 p.m. Stephan Curry, a professional basketball player in the NBA, and Sabrina Ionescu, also a basketball player in the WNBA (Woman National Basketball Association), met at All-Star for a 3-Point Challenge.
Ionescu went first and made 18 of 27 shots, starting 7 for 7. She ended up with 26 points. Curry had lots of pressure, but he responded with a spectacular performance, making nine successful shots of his last 10 to finish with the win. Curry’s prize was a championship belt, with images of goats.
“For us to deliver a show like that, it was perfect,” Curry said. “As much excitement as you can build in that short amount of time with two great shooters going at it. This is something we’ll remember for a long time.”
The competition raised money for both of their foundations. The NBA and WNBA also made donations to Curry’s ”Eat.Learn.Play.Foundation” and Ionescu’s ”S120 Foundation”. Each shot made in the challenge triggered a donation from State Farm to the NBA Foundation to support economic empowerment in the black community.
The fans, both from the NBA and WNBA, seemed to love this event, as much as Curry and Ionescu. It looks like it won’t be the last time this kind of competition occurs, especially since Curry and Ionescu talked afterward about adding partners to the mix next year.
Last year, Ionescu won the WNBA’s 3-point shootout at All-Star weekend with a record of 37 points, smashing Curry’s NBA shootout mark of 31 points. The young lady used a WNBA ball, which is slightly smaller than the NBA ball Curry used. Because of that, she had to do the competition all over again to see who, really was, the winner. So, from there, the plan was concocted for them to meet at All-Star weekend.
