Pura vida en Colombia

Juan Diego Castilla

In January, I got the opportunity to travel to Colombia, capital Bogota, a country located in South America with a population of 48 747 632 people. Spanish is the official language except in the islands San Andrés and Providencia and Santa Catalina where English is the official language. Colombia is the only country of South America with coasts on the Pacific Ocean and access to the Atlantic through the Caribbean Sea. This country has It own part of the lung of the world, the Amazon forest. Colombia is surrounded by Venezuela, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Panama. The weather in Colombia is varied, goes from 35 degrees on the coast and the plains to the colder temperatures, below 0 degrees, in the mountain peaks of the Andes Mountains and the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta.  It is one of the largest producers of coffee in the world and emeralds.

History of Cartagena

In my trip to Colombia I got the chance to stay one week in the beautiful coastal city of Cartagena, located in the northwest, along the Caribbean Sea and currently the capital of the department of Bolivar. The weather in this city,  26 degrees at night and in the day, it can reach 35 degrees or more. Founded on June 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, Cartagena is a city mainly associated with pirate history. There were numerous attacks by pirates from Europe, which made it, at the time, become the most protected city of South America and the Caribbean. Within the city you can find the Castle of San Felipe and the walled city. In Cartagena you will find cobble stone streets, ancient churches, legends and stories while you discover the wonders of the Gold Museum, the secrets of the palace of the Inquisition, beautiful cathedrals and beautiful architecture. You can also make a tour in coach, bike, skate or walk if you prefer while you’re visiting the walled city. So this is Cartagena de Indias, one of the most beautiful preserved cities and preserved of America, declared historical heritage site by UNESCO in 1984.

After touring, where you can have fun!

Near to the walled city there’s a modern tourist sector. Bocagrande, a wide beach, hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shopping centers. Cartagena is also a destination for sun, beaches and water sports, beautiful islands like the Isla Del Rosario,  Isla Barú, Archipelago of San Bernardo and Tierrabomba Island. Besides the beautiful beaches, Bocagrande, Castillogrande, El Laguito, Marbella, La Boquilla and Playa Blanca. There is also the food who’s very good. There is some traditional meal like Arepa e’huevo, arroz de coco and pargo rojo.

Colombia has many many more beautiful places, there’s the Eje Cafetero, Santa Marta, Medellin and many others. You can have a good roadtrip all around Colombia that is not expensive . I hope, I gave all of you a little taste of colombia. Keep in mind that the country is no longer the domain of drug lords dealing cocaine. It is now a safe place to travel and to discover.
