The bikers of the Marmota trails are heartbroken to see their hard work of building the trails over the years go to waste after its destruction began in early May 2024.
The construction of the trails began in 2009 and has been man-made for more than 15 years. Since Mayor Marchand announced Marmota’s destruction, petitions have gone up, and more than 16 thousand people signed. Despite all those efforts, the mayor’s elected team decided to break down the park that many families cherished over the years.
The Marmota team was trying to build the biggest jump in Quebec made 100% from scratch. People trying to accomplish this goal weren’t experts but were passionate about the sport.” La Marmota Trails is more than just a jump site, it is a big family that brings together the same passion; cycling.
“The City says that this site is under Quebec Law so they must keep the grounds in their natural state. “We have difficulty seeing how cycling in a wood and shoveling earth with a shovel would destroy the land’s ecosystem,” says Michel Lachance founder of the trails.
“The City advocates physical activity. We want people to get outside and enjoy nature, but we want them to do it at beginner and intermediate levels, not expert levels.” The minister of the environment says even though he doesn’t know how this jump site is made. “The Trails were perfectly made for either less experienced bikers or some who are experts in the sport.” Because of this, it is known by thousands of people who travel from all over Quebec and worldwide.
This sport isn’t only a hobby but for some people, it’s a religion. So this place was the birthplace of a generation of passionate bikers born from different generations.
