On 7 July 2023, the president of Haitian was assassinated which left the country in the hands of the gangs in Haiti.
Haiti’s political situation has been unstable for the last 40 years, but now that President Jovenel Moise is dead, no democracy is holding back the gangs from waging a civil war. The security in Haiti has greatly decreased because of the lack of a political system. Even though they named a new prime minister, they still do not have a president and the gangs are planning on a mutual agreement to take down the border closure that stops their drug exportation and importation. Their ultimate goal is to make the country their territory.” With our guns and with the Haitian people, we will free the country,” said Jimmy Cherizier, leader of one of the gangs.
In March 2024, gangs decided to jailbreak a prison in Port-Au-Prince. When the police arrived the next day all the guards’ bodies were found dead on the ground and from a total of 4000 prisoners only 100 were still behind bars. After the first jailbreak, another one was reported, and 1400 prisoners were released in Port-Au-Prince. The criminality raised to new heights because of this episode and the city suspects that a lot of prisoners joined the gangs.” The National Police is taking all measures it can to find the escaped prisoners and arrest those responsible for these criminal acts and all their accomplices so that public order can be restored,” said the Communications Ministry on X.
