Environmentalists are concerned about the lack of effort from the Met Gala and its attendees to contribute to the event’s greening.
The fashion industry is responsible for 10 % of carbon emissions and negative environmental impacts, not only because of the waste but also because of the materials used (which are generally not eco-friendly). Environmentalists hope to see change in the future. “Designers, fashion companies, and celebrities all have the ability, the means, and the resources to make sustainable choices but they simply do not,” says Michelle Gabriel, graduate program director of sustainable fashion at GCNYC.
Although the Met Gala has recently been encouraging people to be eco-friendly and use recycled and biodegradable materials in fashion, some celebrities actually did make efforts to participate in the greening of the fashion industry. For example, at this year’s gala, Charli XCX (author) used recycled cotton clothes to make her gown as well as Amanda Seyfried (actress and model) whose dress was made of recycled metallic satin. Demi Moore (actress) was very creative and used recycled wallpaper to embrace sustainable fashion. FKA Twigs (signer and songwriter), Ed Sheeran (singer and songwriter), and Cara Delevingne (model and actress) were collaborating with a lab-grown Jeweller Vrai, and Stella McCartney and they all wore sustainable ensembles too. A few others also wore eco-friendly outfits at the gala and they were not unnoticed, in fact, environmentalists are glad to see changes even though they are minimal and done by only a few people.
Knowing the Met Gala is a huge and popular fashion event, seeing more eco-friendly and sustainable clothes could, not only make a difference in the impacts it has on the environment but also influence other fashion amateurs and designers in being eco-friendly. This way, we could prevent more carbon emissions, waste, pollution, etc. to be done. Environmentalists really hope to see such changes in the future.
