Donald Trump, the new president of the United States, has appointed Elon Musk to his new department, the DOGE. This new program aims to assist the government in its financial decisions to reduce costs.
In fact, the world’s richest man and Vivek Ramaswamy has been chosen by Donald Trump, to lead a new department: the Department of Government Efficiency. “I look forward to Elon and Vivek making changes to the Federal Bureaucracy with an eye on efficiency and, at the same time, making life better for all Americans”, said the President-elect.
The main goal of this panel is to cut up to $2 trillion in the government’s budget; additionally, the Republicans want to cut 50% of federal workers, which could affect more than 100, 000 American jobs. This proposal comes despite protections introduced by Joe Biden to safeguard federal employees. These workers are already preparing lawyers and public campaigns to prevent the government from massive firing.
Elon Musk has a lot of experience with money; in fact, he is the owner of multiple companies like X, Tesla, and Space X. He also created the first Pay-pal version and sold it for millions. However he does have some experience with cutting employees as he fired 6,000 workers or 80% of all workforce from X, he has never dealt with numbers like those from the government.
Vivek Ramaswamy, a former presidential candidate, will also make his apparition in this new department. His past is full of numbers and calculations as he created and managed the biotechnology firm Roivant Sciences for more than 3 years. Here’s what Trump said he expects from Musk and Vivek: “Together, these two wonderful Americans will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.”
Although a lot of people, this panel already existed in previous elections. In fact, it had previously been proposed by different presidents, the first one, Ronald Reagan, in 1982, he proposed a group of private experts that would recommend ways to remove inefficiency and waste. Furthermore, Trump suggested pretty much the same thing in 2017, but both failed to reach their goals as they weren’t very successful.
Americans aren’t very confident that these goals will be reached and that the DOGE will be able to make great changes in tomorrow’s government, but they have to trust Trump as they voted for him. Some people even call it the “Department of Making Myself Millionaire” or “Department of Easily Replaceable People”.
