Many classes of francisation in Quebec city are missing lots of budget to cover all of their students’ requests. All of that is due to a significant increase of immigrants.
Since last year, lots of parents have asked for francisation classes for their kids but only half of them got their first response. The others are still waiting for someone to take care of them. “That’s a lot of people that we won’t be able to Frenchify next year.” said Carl Ouellet, the president of the AQPDE. The AQPDE is a proactive association whose goal is to recognize and defend the professional, social, political and economic interests of school management.
There was an increase in the budget since 2019 that went from 69M$ to 104M$ to cover more classes, but the amount of immigrants has also increased a lot since 2019.
In 2019 we counted approximately 54 000 immigrants, and now in 2024 we count about 170 000 immigrants. That’s about three times the number of 2019 for not even two times the budget.
The life of kids is going to get harder and it’s going to be more difficult for them to learn since their school or any other institution can’t cover all their needs. Some kids won’t be able to integrate their school subjects because of all the cuts the government will have to do in francisation classes.
The cuts in francisation classes won’t affect only students but also teachers. “I feel like I’m being thrown out the window, but it’s not because there isn’t enough demand, it’s just because the funding has been cut.” said a francisation teacher from the Lanaudiere region.
Over one hundred teachers are going to lose their jobs towards the end of January and over 1300 students won’t be able to learn french. The francisation and other teachers are very angry and disappointed about the current situation in every school.
