Performance Boost and AI
Nvidia definitely made a step up with this new GPU generation. During the presentation of this new graphics card, Nvidia’s CEO said, “This new generation is twice as fast as the previous one.” If that had been true, it would have been quite remarkable because we normally don’t see this much improvement between generations. The average % of performance upgrade is usually between 10-30%. The application of AI with the RTX series, which first debuted in 2018, is growing even more. New graphics cards generate artificial frames to boost the frame rate. With the new DLSS 4, the performance is multiplied by 8, since many artificial frames are generated with just one normal frame. The only downside is that not all games are compatible with DLSS 4.
Blackwell Architecture
This big performance boost would not have been possible without the new Blackwell architecture. “Blackwell, the engine of AI, has arrived for PC gamers, developers, and creatives,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. The key difference between Blackwell and Ada Lovelace architecture (40-series GPU architecture) is the AI of the Blackwell architecture integrated into its shaders, enabling real-time, film-quality materials, lighting, and character details. It makes the characters look much better, especially the facial details and skin.
Specs
The new 5090 coming out on January 30th will cost $1999 USD. It has 32 GB of GDDR7, reaching data rates of up to 28 Gbps effective, which is 25% faster than the 4090’s rates. This leads to faster loading times and smoother performance. It has 21,760 cores, so it can handle many parallel tasks at once. This is really important if you want to do tasks like graphic rendering, AI processing, and video encoding. In benchmarks, it is about 30% faster than the 4090, so it’s not as powerful as Nvidia claimed.
What is a Graphics Card?
As the word “GPU” might be new to some people, it stands for Graphics Processing Unit. It is one of the main components you need in order to build a PC. This graphic processor is specifically designed to execute the complicated reframing of images, videos, and graphics, and it can do math as well. The GPU receives raw data and produces the images we see on the screen, no matter if we are talking about playing video games, watching a movie, or doing 3D projects.
Compatibility
You may be wondering which processors to pair it with. Yes, you need a processor, and it needs to be powerful enough, but not too much. If it isn’t powerful enough, it will bottleneck your 5090, meaning that it’s restricted by the processor and could perform better with a higher-end CPU. If you are on a tight budget, you should go with an Intel i5-14600k, which is fine. If you can spend a little bit more, you could get an AMD Ryzen 9 9800x 3D or an AMD Ryzen 7 7800x 3D, which are some of the best processors on the market for normal use.
