Now back in The White House, Donald Trump renewed the failed calls he made during his first time as an american president for the United States to buy Greenland from Denmark. Doing that he is lengthening the list of allied countries he is currently arguing with even before officially taking back office on January 20, 2025.
Trump’s renewed interest on Greenland has stocked a long-standing geopolitical discussion, he made a lot of headlines when he publicly expressed his desire to buy the large arctic island.
His comments made widespread criticism in Denmark as in Greenland, the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the idea “absurd” and Greenland’s leadership also agreed.
Even after all the dismissive answers Trump’s administration is reportedly revisiting the proposal but now in the context of the upcoming strategic importance of the Arctic region due to the climatic change and intruding military interests.
The thawing, the melting, of Arctic ice is opening more new shipping routes and potential energy resources, making the region geopolitically more significant.
That move has caused a big alarm in Denmark, which views Greenland as an integral part of the kingdom. Denmark has been insisting on the fact that Greenlanders are the ones that should be deciding on what they want to do with their political statuses and that it shouldn’t be external countries.
Despite all Trump’s efforts, the idea of sealing the island remains very unpopular in the Greenland population. Greenland will stay as Denmark territory until an other agreement says otherwise.
