Vendredi is about three teenagers in secondary four who are searching for their identity. In the story, they struggle to balance their social life with their aspirations. For this, they recap their whole week every Friday at Steve’s house.
Steve is a witness character who helps provide an external perspective on the events in the story. He is also the stepbrother of Olivia.
Olivia, Hubert, and Emily have been best friends since the beginning of the school year. Olivia, a new student who has just moved after her mother’s death, must live with her stepbrother. Hubert and Emily have two opposite personalities: Hubert is the bookish student who knows the dictionary by heart, while Emily is a social butterfly who loves to party.
The authors wanted to write a book that reflects the emotional and social dilemmas that teenagers experience while trying to define who they are. They mostly wrote this novel to engage their students, who are in the age group of 12 to 17. They created the main characters of the book by combining personalities, character traits, and anecdotes from their surroundings.
Miss Julie Granger and Miss Marie-Luce Higgins are two French teachers at La Camaradière High School. They are united by their passion for writing. Together, they wrote a series of books, starting with Mardi and continuing through Vendredi. Their most recent work, Vendredi, was published on September 14, 2024.
After reading the entire book, I think that the authors successfully conveyed the main idea to the readers. Moreover, it is easy to connect with the characters and relate to some of their actions, which helps keep to make the story engaging.
