The order was signed on live television, where Mark Carney is seen signing a document to get rid of the controversial carbon ”tax”.
This was his first decision as new prime minister, after Trudeau’s resignation as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.
“It’s my honour, on behalf of my colleagues, to sign this,” said the new prime minister, as the cabinet erupted into applause.
The carbon price was introduced in 2019. Under it, a fee was put on carbon emissions from goods and services, depending on carbon content.
It was created to help the environment by lowering the rate at which industries and consumers use carbon. However, despite its possible benefits, people seemed to dislike it, even to the point of despising the carbon price entirely.
But Mark Carney was not the only possible candidate with the idea of removing the carbon tax. The leader of the Conservative Party of Canada promised it as one of his priorities if he were elected in the next election in October 2025. Now that the carbon price is gone, this could damage the amount of votes received by the leader of the CPC.
Unfortunately, businesses will not have as much luck as the public, as the carbon price on companies will continue. And it seems very probable that it will stay that way.
Mark Carney, in a statement, said ”Canada’s biggest emitters will contribute their fair share”.
Before going into politics, Carney was involved in finance, he was the governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013. And soon became the governor of the Bank of England, having a 7-year term before stepping down in 2020.
