For the eighth time in just 16 months, since the Tesla Cybertruck was launched, nearly all of the Cybertrucks were recalled by U.S. safety regulators last month. More than 46,096 Tesla Electric Trucks are part of this massive recall.
The major problem is that an exterior steel panel running along the sides of the windshield can detach while driving, endangering other drivers. The stainless steel strip, also known as the cant rail assembly, is glued to the structure of the truck, with a structural adhesive that is not strong enough. Tesla learnt about this problem early this year, according to the NHTSA.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mentioned that a stronger adhesive would resolve the problem. This adhesive did not show any weakness, even when exposed to environmental factors like wind, rain, or moisture.
Tesla will replace the adhesive and steel panel for free. Recall notices are expected to be sent on May 19, 2025.
The reactions from the public to this massive recall are everywhere on the internet, but mainly on social media platforms. The reactions are mostly humorous, but some express frustration and disappointment. “I’ve always wanted a car with a roof that flies off for no reason,” said Ben Collins, the CEO of The Onion, on Facebook. A Reddit user, irritated by the amount of recalls, commented ‘Fuck Musk, and fuck Tesla.’
Even after all these recalls and hate, the electric truck is still gaining attention from the public, mostly because of the support from public figures like former President Donald Trump. However, the frequency of recalls made potential customers concerned about its reliability and safety.
