It was a dramatic move that angered the Canadian population and politicians, including Canada’s prime minister, Mark Carney.
In response to Donald Trump’s new decision, Mark Carney cancelled a visit to the province of Québec to return to Ottawa to discuss the tariffs on automobiles.
The tariffs, which are set to take effect on April 2nd, are expected to significantly impact the automotive industry.
Mark Carney expressed discontent and concern in response to the tariffs. He highlighted his plan to fight against these ”unjustified trade actions,” recently stating that Trump’s tariffs and threats are “the most significant crisis of our lifetime” and that he will fight against “any attempts to weaken Canada, to break us down, that will never happen.”
Carney promises to retaliate forcefully in response to the tariffs, as well as drifting away from dependence on trading with the US, also claiming ”The old relationship we had with the United States, based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation, is over.”
Carney also conceded that the new auto tariffs will damage Canada’s economy, but the country will ”emerge stronger” from this new trade war. ‘We have a look out for ourselves and each other,’ he added.
Some experts have predicted that Trump’s decision could have major consequences, like decreasing production, driving up car prices, and even inciting a global trade war.
