Jeanette Bertrand, a great and inspiring image of feminism has reached 100 years on the previous weeks. On March 25th, she had a special birthday party with her loved one to emphasize this event. ”I wish everyone to reach 100 years old, it’s so much fun! Now I can die; I am overjoy,” she added. At the Place of Arts in Montreal, a short documentary video was shown to the public highlighting the notable moments of the life of Jeanette.
Jeanette studied letters at the university of Montreal which will bring her to start her journalist career in 1950. With her rich knowledge of human nature, she became an animator for the radio, who brought her to start having an interest in television. With all her studies, Jeanette became the best version of herself, by fulfilling several roles such as a writer, a journalist, an actress, and a television presenter.
On the side of feminism, Jeanette accomplished many things that have improved a lot the life of the women of today. She broke many taboos concerning everything about the equality of genders and about homosexuality. Participating in several meetings concerning this cause, Jeanette made life better for many teenagers who were in the doubt. She also broke many questions about the right of women concerning abortion and access to contraception.
When she was in her teenage years, Jeanette didn’t have a parental figure who taught her all about sexuality. Contrariwise, her grandmother kept a heart mail where she talked about subjects Jeanette wasn’t used to hearing. ”When I was a teenager, I would rush to my grandmother’s house to read her love letters. It was sort of my sex education school, because I came from a family where things weren’t explained to me,” said Mrs. Bertrand. This love book, full of knowledge, helped her to learn more about the situation of today.
With her popularity on social media and television, Jeanette quickly gained recognition through several touching series and documentaries. Diffused between 1986 and 1996, the TV series ”Avec un grand A” addressed dramatic subjects concerning domestic violence, homosexuality, and sexually transmitted infections, mainly focused on AIDS. Her documentary ”Jeanette et ses filles” also learned many things about the equality of the sexes and the influence she has on women in our society.
Mrs. Bertrand was not only a feminist figure but also a great writer. She especially wrote the book ”Ma vie en trois actes”, an autobiography of all the challenges she accomplished during her life. Published in 2004, the book has been a very good seller in several bookstores in Quebec. Opening her heart, Jeanette wrote a book talking about all the sacrifices women had to face in the past including their challenges, their struggles, and their victories.
Jeanette is a great woman who has accomplished many successes to make things happen. Many people are very thankful for what she did to improve our society.
