After the visit of the current U.S. president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., on January 7, it is now the turn of the vice president’s wife, Usha Vance, to step onto the island.
It is officially a three-day trip, during which she will be accompanied by her son. They will first attend the Avannaata Qimussersua, a sled dog race in Sisimiut, the second city in the Danish autonomous territory.
But in Nuuk, as in Copenhagen, Ms. Vance’s visit is considered a highly political event and arouses indignation, especially since Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, and his energy secretary, Chris Wright, will be on the trip too.
A demonstration against their coming is planned in Sisimiut on Saturday.
In a video posted on Instagram on Sunday, Ms.Vance said she «read everything with her children about the sled race,» of which she recalls in passing that her country is a «sponsor».
The organizers confirmed that the U.S. consulate in Nuuk had covered the team’s transportation costs as part of an agreement with the local airline, Air Greenland.
«I also come to celebrate the long history of mutual respect and cooperation between our nations and express that the relationship we had and will still have is going to stay.» She said during an interview.
The declaration of Ms Vance shows the commitment of the US, but still, the Greenlanders are on their guard.
