The new regulation has just arrived, which will strengthen the FIA test on the rear wings of each car. It will start at the Spanish Grand Prix, the ninth round of this season, from May 30th to June 1st. The FIA was already doing load and deflection tests, which means that they were putting weight. It also says that the space between the flex on the wings when the FIA puts weight on the wings will drop from 15 to 10 mm. Their goal is to eliminate mini DRS at all.
Teams like Ferrari and Mercedes have decided to install fly wings on their cars and try to abuse them as much as they can, but they will be forced to change them before the Grand Prix in Spain. The change could be a huge downgrade for some teams because their rear wings might not be as efficient as before, or could be a ”gamechanger” according to Frederic Vasseu, Ferrari’s team principal.
McLaren was the first to use mini DRS at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last year, and the car was going a lot faster in a aight line than other cars. When the FIA looked at the camera car footage, they noticed that the upper part of the rear wing of the F1 elevated itself. There was also camera footage that showed that, compared to the Red Bull Wings, the McLaren wing was moving a little bit too much.
According to the regulations, the wing must be rigid enough and must be immobile because it can offer theoretically more performance to the car using it, because it’s as if its DRS were always open. Even if the other teams might have doubts, according to the FIA, the control is.
A flexi wing allows better balance on the car, which can solve some big issues like low-speed understeer or high-speed oversteer.
Understeering is when the steering wheel is turning bu,t the car is not turning. On the contrary, oversteering is when the car is turning more than the steering wheel itself.
