Master of Puppets Added to the National Recording Preservation
March 31, 2016
Metallica’s album Master Of Puppets is the first heavy metal recording chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress due to its historical importance.
Every year the national library of congres selects 25 pieces judged to be “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant” and keeps the best-quality originals for future generations that are at least 10 years old for preservation. National Recording Preservation Board, has been choosing select recordings since 2000, securing 450 pieces of music to the Registry. The library added by saying that Master Of Puppets, released in 1986 as the third album by Metallica, “shows the group moving away from its thrash-metal history and reputation and exploring new ideas”.
Master of Puppets is the only metal release chosen for preservation in 2016. The album will join other master pieces like Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” single, Carlos Santana’s Abraxas, George Carlin’s Class Clown comedy album and much more others selected for 2016.
Master of Puppets was released on february 24, 1986 and was the first album Metallica recorded after signing a major label deal with Elektra Record. It is the last record to feature bassist Cliff Burton who was killed later that year in a tour bus crash. The album only reached no. 29 on the billboard album chart but has sold more than 6 millions copis arround the world.
