All around the world, in all countries, there are women who don’t like the way they look. Can you see the beauty in yourself? If someone asked you to describe yourself, what would you say?
Sometimes we can’t see beauty in ourselves. That’s why Dove made an amazing campaign about the way people see themselves and how people perceive us.
Why is the way we look so important? The physical appearance is the first point of contact with the world. Some people are scared to be judged by the way they look. That’s why the look of a person is important for most. Publicity has contributed to forge an image of perfection that we just can’t achieve. 85% of the publicities we see are not the reality.
The statistic of women who have problems with their self- esteem or their body image is huge : 61% in the US, 86% in China, 56% in India , 96% in the UK, and 72% in Brazil.
To boost their self- esteem, Dove made a new campaign. Five women were called in a room with a curtain in the center. On one side there was an FBI forensic artist named Gil Zamora. On the other side there was a woman sitting on a chair. Each one were supposed to describe themselves to the artist. Gil Zamora didn’t know how the woman looked like behind the curtain. He drew each one of them the way they were describing their face.
Then, a random person was asked to describe the same women to Gil. The forensic artist put the two different portraits side by side. The one which the stranger described looked more beautiful and happier then the portrait that the woman describing herself. This tends to prove that we are more beautiful than we think!
