The classic NHL skills competition and the all star game will take place on january 28th and 29th, at the Staples center, in Los Angeles.

For the second year, the National Hockey League all star game will be held as a tournament. There will be four teams, one for each divisions (metropolitan, atlantic, pacific and central). It will be another 3-on-3 game format. The tournament will be divided in three 20 minute games, which the winners of each semi-final will face off in the final, to have a chance to win $1 million.

The league had quite of a great history with the all-star games. Remember the record of the 108.8 mp/h shot by Zdeno Chara. But this year, for it’s 62nd anniversary it seems like there are some minor problems. Some people are complaining about the fact that the NHL has obligated each teams to have at least one player that participates. They say that it might affect the quality of the skills competition and the tournament, according to them it will not be as good as before.

Also, they removed the breakaway challenge from the skills competition. It was one of the most appreciated activity by the fans, so some of them might be upset. ”They’re getting rid of it in the skills competition. No sunglasses. No hats for Ovie. No superman cape for Kane. No mini-sticks for Corey Perry.” said Nick Kypreos, an analyst of hockey night in Canada.

For some people it might not be like before, but that is still one of the biggest and most important event in hockey.
