Angels Don’t Always Have Wings!
February 24, 2017
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show in Paris, at the Grand Palais, feminist or not, what are the angels reactions to this comment? what you may not know is that the angels life is not just about the catwalk, it is about self-acknowledgment.
The Victoria’s Secret fashion show is an annual event to promote the Victoria’s Secret brand. This year, the fashion show happened on December 5th in the beautiful city of light. This event is one of the most watched fashion show in the entire world, in fact more than 500 million people watch it on a regular basis. The show also features some of the world biggest models like Adriana Lima, Stella Maxwell, Romee Strijd and others. Those models are also called angels and every year, they fall down from heaven and parade with nothing more than underwear. Over the decades, medias noticed that angels have more chance getting a job in the fashion industry than other models. They also are most likely to do covers of magazines. The week after every pageantry, angels give their impressions about their experience on the runway and every comment is positive.
At their debut, Victoria’s Secret only included American girl with white skin as light as the snow, but with time, came diversity, some girls are now from Portugal, Sweden, Holland, South Africa, just to mention a few. Although they took a big step, some people are worried about the show being anti feminist, they don’t want little girls to think that they are not pretty if they don’t look like models. That they can’t succeed in life if they don’t have skinny long legs or a thin waist.
However, the world could do more than change the size of their beauty models, they could change their state of mind. People just keep comparing themselves with beauty ideals , but there is always going to be someone taller than you, prettier than you and healthier than you, it’s a continuous chain.
On the other hand, we should admire the angels because of their confidence, they are proud of their body, that is what we should teach our children, to be proud of who they are, because that is what feminism is all about, acceptance.
To clarify, all angels qualify themselves as feminist: ”I know that my body being thicker on that runway meant something. A lot of the things I did in my modeling career as a woman of color was part of that feminism — of expanding the definition of beauty and making women feel beautiful, no matter what color their skin is.” said the ex angel Tyra Banks.
For the angels, anti feminism are two strong words but we should stop using them to describe Victoria’s secret fashion show.
