Can a variant of another virus could procure protection against severe covid?

Some studies showed that a variant of TMPRSS2 could somehow procure against severe covid. But how can this happen?

SARS-CoV-2, the causative agent of Covid-19, is an infection that sometimes can become fatal for some people. It depends on which symptoms they have and how their body reacts. The possible symptoms are mild fever, sore throat, and other symptoms. But some people develop no symptoms.Something that we don’t know is that sometimes genetics can determine Covid-19 severity.

TMPRSS2 who is a proteine, transmembrane protease serine type-2, can play a role in SARS-CoV-2 into host cells. We can see it in a lot of places like in the lungs, colon, stomach, salivary glands and some other tissues. ACE2, the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 that is expressed in the lungs is a receptor to which SARS-CoV-2 binds.

Studies have shown that a SARS-CoV-2 infected mice, who has been treated with the serine protease inhibitor camostat mesylate have a big survival rate. We think that if we inhibit TMPRSS2 can SARS-CoV-2 infections.

A team of researchers think that if we naturally-occur variations in the TMPRSS2 gene may modulate the severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Now the question is Is it really true? Can a variant of a virus procure a protection against another virus?
