Permafrost Warning!

Permafrost+Warning%21

Melting permafrost could become a real problem for the environment really soon.

Because of actual climate change, permafrost could melt. These grounds of ice are mostly found in regions with high mountains and in higher latitudes. So usually near the North and South poles .  If this happens water and oil would come out of it and pollute the water and the air. It would have a really bad effect on the earth and would eventually affect us.

Permafrost is pieces of ground frozen at -32 or colder for at least 2 years or more. The permafrost is made of a combination of soil, rocks, and sand. All these substances are held together by the ice but are not always covered by snow. The permafrost soils contain a large quantity of organic carbon which is leftover from dead plants that couldn’t decompose or rot away due to the cold. Permafrost situated at lower heights usually contains soils made from minerals.

On top of these layers is “the active layer” which is about 4 to 6 inches and it has this name because it is not frozen all year.

Effects of permafrost melting on earth:

– Melting permafrost would release greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide or methane into the atmosphere from organic carbon stuck in these ones.

– Some microbes stuck in permafrost, which is really dangerous for humans and animals, could get in the water and have really bad effects on us.

– Some villages are built on permafrost so if this one melts the roads, the houses, and any other infrastructures would completely be destroyed.
