Lack of Workers: Will it Improve Soon?

With summer coming, will there be a new wave of young workers hitting the job market and allowing businesses to thrive?

Why is there a lack of workers?

Now that lots of people have vaccines and that covid is less and less dangerous will there be more and more teens starting to work? Lots of jobs now have great working conditions to attract more and more people with high salaries. The minimum wage is now 14,25$ but still, lots of workplaces are offering higher salaries. As an example, McDonald’s offers 16$ per hour for an employee with no experience. With summer coming there will maybe have an increase of young workers applying for a job. Lots of teens about 14-15 years old have jobs in Quebec.

CERB:

The Canadian emergency response benefit (CERB) was given by the government from April 6th, 2020. According to data from the Active Population Survey, between March and September 2019, the total number of hours women worked decreased by 16,3 percent and men’s hours decreased by 13,1 percent. CTV NEWS said: ”In the end, the CERB doled out $81.64 billion to 8.9 million recipients”. It means that there are lots of people that have lost their jobs and quit during the pandemic. CERB is now finished so it will maybe have a little impact on the workplace because people won’t leave their job only to get the money given by the government.

immigration:

The fact that there are fewer and fewer immigrant arrivals because of covid doesn’t help our problem. Last year, there were about 33 665 immigrants that came to Canada. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada provided information on the government of Canada’s multi-year immigration level to increase from 2022 to 2024. According to their new figures: In 2022, Canada will welcome 431 645 new permanent residents, 447 055 in 2023, and 451 000 in 2024.

The population is getting older

In the 90s people were trying to get a job but it wasn’t as easy as now in 2022. At the time, there were too many workers for the number of jobs available. It wasn’t easy to get picked among all the others that were trying to get the job too. Since the 2nd world war, there have been at least two baby booms which have modified the population curb. The first baby boom happened because of World War 2 in the 1940s, people didn’t want to go to war so they had babies. It then led to problems in the 80s. The second boom was because the price for nurseries went down to 7$ per day and people. young couples saw an opportunity because of the lower prices. From 2003 to 2007 it went from 7 485 753 to 7 692 916 an increase of 207 163 newborns in only 4 years. The average in Quebec is about 84 000 newborns every year.
