Taiwan made a sensation this March 14 by showing a new type of drone to defend against a possible invasion from China.

Imagine you’re a Chinese soldier who has the mission to invade Taiwan. You and your comrades approach the Taiwanese coast in an amphibious vehicle when a flying grenade launched ten kilometres away destroys your boat and its crew. This is the idea of the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology ( NCSIST )  based in Taichung. This drone is light and can be carried in a backpack.“Light and portable, it is like a big grenade that can fly,” said Chi Lin-pin, head of the aeronautical systems research division of the military institute. This new weapon has an autonomy of fifteen minutes. It can hit the target at ten kilometres round.” This innovation of the NCSIST is also quite effective to defend the coastline, a situation where we need to improve.” also said Mr. Chi.

China and Taiwan have been in conflict over the sovereignty of the territory. Pekin pretends they are part of China, while the Taiwanese see themselves as a growing democracy. Since the beginning of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the conflict has risen to another level.

On August 2, 2022, was the visit of Nancy Pelosi, president of the house of representatives of the United States, visited Taiwan. In response, China entered the Taiwanese territory with planes and warships to induce fear in this west-allied country.

Another reason to fear for the integrity of the island was the fact that October 15, 2022, was the date of the rigged election in the People’s Republic of China, and Xi Jinping, the paramount leader of China, promised to invade Taiwan before 2050.

A century ago, Taiwan was called the Republic of China and dominated all the actual Chinese territory, but a civil war began between the communist and the government. As if it was not enough, the Japanese invaded the unstable country at the end of World War Two. The civil war started again, and the communist party forced the people of the republic to escape to the Island of Formosa, where they gradually became Taiwan.
