Throughout the week, a fire caught in the Olympic Stadium of Montréal, and the athletes were very worried about their training and how fast the event was coming up. This could badly influence the preparation of the athletes for the Olympic games in Paris.
The sports institute will, unfortunately, stay closed until April 2, it has been a whole week since the 14 floors got shut down because of the fire. ” The fire was quickly brought under control, the windows on the INS exploded due to the heat and the smoke got in which damaged the installations,” explained Radio Canada Cédric Essiminy.” The damages were caused by the smoke and the water that stopped the fire.” they are still considered as major damages. The athletes were advised not to come to the INS where the Quebec diving elite team, judo, swimming, weightlifting, and many other sports train. Between 250 and 300 athletes from different disciplines attend the INS daily to train others to benefit from adapted medical services.
” A lost training day for athletes preparing for the Olympic games is still important,” said Jean Gosselin, communications director at the INS. He then recommended to the athletes to organize something outside of the INS for the next week to minimize the impact of the fire on their training.
” Our experts are in contact with the national team’s athletes to continue giving services,” assured Jean Gosselin who advised that the medical services will be at another location for now.
There is also a plan to make a new roof for the stadium which would allow the stadium to increase the number of events, double the visitors, and triple the revenues, it will probably be delayed a little bit because of this fire.
Police are investigating what caused the fire but Jean-Pierre Brassant affirmed that they could determine that a human action caused the fire, still, investigators are trying to learn if it was accidental or intentional.
