Are The Olympics Really About Unity?

Researchers found underpaid immigrant workers abused since September 2022 for building sites for the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games of Summer 2024.

These games which are supposed to represent a union between five continents have been using undocumented workers to work in horrible conditions. Firstly they are severely underpaid by their employer. They also work impossible hours during the day and the night. Some even work 12 hours a day for seven days a week.

The workers have been working without having an official contract. They were hired by a company called Solideo, known for subcontracting its work to other companies. In June, nine immigrant workers were seen on a site run by Solideo that was also exploiting them for their benefits. Because of this discovery, authorities around Paris investigated the Olympic sites to see if this company had been using this illegal but cheap way of building the sites.

This finding meant that the company owner, Antoine du Souich, said quickly “I took the necessary steps by terminating the contract.”

A similar event happened at the Summer Olympics in Dubai when Syrians were abused in the same way that the workers were this year. “They used an awful method to build the sites for the games meant to represent unity and prosperity,” said Charles Alain.

This made the question “Is the Olympics really about unity?” come out.

Hi, my name is Ben and I am very energetic. My favorite subject in school is physical education because I'm athletic. My favorite sport is volleyball, even though I’m not the tallest or strongest, because I love being in a team and working with others. Later in life, I want to be a physio or a chiropractor and start my own business. When I’m alone I either listen to music or play with my volleyball. My favorite season is summer because there are so many other things to do than in the winter or other seasons. You can go out with your friends and stay outside all day long in the pool or at the park.
