Over $102 million in jewelry was stolen in less than 8 minutes. People were surprised that jewelry from the 19th century was stolen in broad daylight.
The robbery not only affected the Louvre but also the tourists who were waiting in front of the famous museum. In fact, the museum has been temporarily closed because of the ongoing police investigation.
The thieves entered the Apollo Gallery using a truck-mounted lift to reach a window, then used an angle grinder to cut through the glass.
A total of eight pieces of jewelry were stolen. Among the stolen items were Empress Eugénie’s tiara and the sapphire jewelry sets of Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense.
While escaping, the criminals dropped the Empress Eugénie’s diamond-and-emerald crown, along with a pair of gloves, glasses, and a jacket.
This information greatly helped the police identify four suspects believed to have been directly involved in the heist. One of them was identified as Abdoulaye N, a 39-year-old man.
So far, the stolen jewelry has still not been found. Experts believe that the thieves will disassemble it and sell the components separately.
