The first winter in Quebec is often surprising and can be a real shock for newcomers. It’s a real challenge for them because winters are long, dark, and extremely cold. Still, they bring a sense of community, discovery, and fun.
For many immigrants who come from a warmer climate, the first snowfall feels magical, but the extreme cold quickly becomes intimidating. They have to adapt quickly and also learn how to dress properly, walk safely, and adjust to the climate.
“The first time we arrived here, it was winter, and it was new for all of us. It was complicated at first, but my sister and I really enjoyed the snow.” Sarah G.
“7 years ago, my family and I arrived in Quebec. It was our first winter, we were scared in the beginning, but we adapted really well, and now we love winter.” Camila R.
It is really exciting for them to experience their first real winter. They can discover all the activities we can do, like build a snowman, ice skating, snowball battles, sled races, and skiing.
Despite moments of loneliness, fatigue, and cold during these dark months, they will eventually discover that there are a lot of winter traditions that keep it fun and entertaining.
We have Le Carnaval de Québec, which is a giant winter festival with parades, ice sculptures, and Bonhomme Carnaval. There is also La Cabane à Sucre, where we eat maple syrup on snow, eat traditional Quebec food, and where we can listen to folk music. In Le Vieux Québec, there is La parade de Jouets, where you can see Santa Claus and his elves. A lot of people also donate toys for children in the hospital there. Finally, there are a lot of holiday markets where they sell decorations, crafts, and Christmas lights
“The first winter we lived here, in 2019, we went to Le Vieux Quebec, and we discovered Le Carnaval de Québec. We loved it, and it was very entertaining. I have a lot of good memories of this season.“ J.A.
In the end, a newcomer’s first winter in Quebec becomes not just a season to endure, but an experience that makes memories, builds resilience, and shows the beauty of our province.
