On December 22nd, 2025, Trump made a serious threat to Greenland’s sovereignty. He would have liked to take control of the territory. According to multiple sources, the White House wants Greenland for multiple reasons. One of them would be to take control of the Northern Passage. This passage is important since using it would reduce the shipping time of goods from East Asia and northern Europe by 35 to 60%. The country that exercises control over maritime traffic transiting through it could gain an economic advantage.
Also, the region is rich in rare-earth minerals. Global warming would make these resources easier to access in the near future. Earth minerals are important because they are used to make electrical devices like electric cars, windmill and many more. They are also rare to find around the globe.
Fortunately for now, Trump backed off his threat, but it remains an issue that the administration considers important.
While Greenland thought that the adventure was over, on February 21st, 2026, a United States nuclear submarine asked for help to save a sailor who was sick. The underwater machine was 7 nautical miles away and sent a message to Nuuk requesting a plane or another means of transport to a medical facility. A hydroplane came to save the mariner and brought him to safety. Greenland authorities did not hesitate to rescue the sailor.
The submarine was presumably conducting a routine military patrol in the Arctic region at the time of the rescue. Greenland is one of the most strategic terrains for the military. Still, one may wonder about the presence of an American nuclear submarine in the region.
After the incident, Trump’s response to it was that he wanted to send, with the help of Jeff Landry, a great hospital boat to take care of the people who are sick there and are not being taken care of. For instance, the medical services are free in Greenland. Nuuk politely rejected the offer.
