The ‘’old’’ clothes that we are throwing away have a big impact on our environment. 

Throwing clothing away when they are new it’s a bad thing but you can donate then right? Yes, but out of all the clothing that is donated 80% is doomed to the landfill or incineration, only 20% are reused or recycled. That’s very little knowing that 2700 liters of water are used to make one single cotton shirt. Furthermore textile can take more than 200 years to decompose.

 The volume of clothing that American throw away each year has doubled in the last 20 years from 7 million to 14 million tons . Even if we donate our clothes there still is a lot of misinformation and a lot of the clothing gets packed, shipped and re-sold overseas or gets dumped in landfills anyways. 

So what should we do to change that. First, we need to buy less things and make them last longer. Just by doing that we can help reduce the emissions from clothing production and disposal by as much as 24 %. You can also invest in quality. When you buy good quality textile you can make them live longer and contribute to a better future for our planet . 

Supporting our local shop can help too because it avoids the fast fashion that has very bad working conditions for the worker and very bad for the people and the environment. So buying from them brings just good things so why not try ?  

Another reason to stop buying from the fast fashion and to buy local is because it’s a fashion that will not stay for a long time so at the end we will throw this “not cool clothing“  and we better buy basic things that we can wear for a longer period of time.
