On the 18th of January 2026, Genevieve Guilbault announced that she will leave political life after her term ends. She said she took this for her two children, Christophe, 6, and Capucine, 8.
She decided to quit since her children are getting older and their childhood is almost over; she doesn’t want to miss it. She also said that she wants to spend more time with her family, mostly her parents. “They never knew me other than doing politics,” said Genevieve Guilbault when she announced the news at a political speech. ”For me, it is evident that if I continue in politics for the next four years, I would technically miss my children’s childhood.”
Even if Fançois Legault quit politics a few days before her, Geneviève announced that she had made this decision a while ago and that it had nothing to do with the actual political situation.
Genevieve started her career in politics in 2017, when she wanted to make a change, and has been working in that field for nine years. On October 2 2017, Genevieve was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in a by-election held in the electoral district of Louis-Hébert.
On October 18 2018, she was appointed Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Safety, a position that included overseeing the security of Quebec. Genevieve Guilbault served as Minister of Public Security from 2018 to October 2022, during which she led key initiatives, including enforcing public health orders during the COVID-19 pandemic and introducing various public safety measures.
On October 20 2022, she was re-appointed Deputy Premier and continued to serve the city of Quebec. She also replaced François Bonnardel as an appointed Minister of Transportation.
