Team Canada won its first silver medal at the Milano-Cortina Winter 2026 Olympics on Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, in the short track speed skating event. It is Canada’s first Olympic medal in the mixed relay, an event that was added to the program four years ago at Beijing 2022.
The team finished just behind host nation Italy, after a stressful race between Canada, Germany and China.
Six skaters contributed to what is hoped will be the first of many podium finishes in short track. Kim Boutin, Courtney Sarault, William Dandjinou, and Félix Roussel skated in the final, while Florence Brunelle and Steven Dubois took part in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively.
“Everyone is aiming for gold. That’s how we build our team.” “We’ve set very high goals over the past two years, and we have very ambitious ones here. Is it a problem to finish second today? Absolutely not.” Sarault said, proud of her team.
The Canadian mixed relay team was informed 10 minutes before the final that they were competing. For Félix Roussel, it was his first time in the Olympic Games.
For Boutin, it is her fifth career Olympic medal, making her Canada’s most decorated female short track speed skater. She won three medals at PyeongChang 2018 and then another at Beijing 2022.
“I’m still trying to process my emotions, but it’s definitely a big relief,” Brunelle said. “What’s most meaningful is having the chance to compete alongside people we care about, people we appreciate, and with whom we’ve put in the work over the past few years. That’s what’s most special to me. We really want to grow together.”
This achievement marked a highlight for Canada early in the Games, following other podium performances earlier in the week. Athletes had already earned medals in other events, including bronze finishes, and the silver adds to that growing list of podium results.
