Web Giants Prevent Russian Medias From Being Paid on Their Platforms

Google, Youtube and Facebook have announced that they have blocked the possibility of making money on their platforms to Russian state-funded media due to the Ukraine Invasion.

“In response to the war in Ukraine, we are suspending the ability for Russian state-funded media to monetize on our platforms,” a spokesperson from Google said in a statement.

Before Google in turn announced the demonetization to the Russian media, YouTube had already announced, a little earlier, that it would prevent certain Russian channels from earning money via the videos broadcast on its platform.

Last Friday it was facebook’s turn to announce the news.

“We now prohibit Russian state media from running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of security policy, said on Twitter.

For Youtube its actually the same case. YouTube channels make money from ads that appear when users watch their videos. However, they no longer can.

By taking this decision, the internet giants want to make this blockage a consequence for the Russian people who want war on Ukraine. They want to try to ease the tensions by removing something important in the lives of more than one who unfortunately will find themselves without income.
