During the men’s hockey final, Canada delivered a strong overall performance despite the loss. They outplayed the U.S. team for much of the game, but couldn’t overcome them.
Regrettably, Canada missed several opportunities, including open nets. They failed to convert on multiple chances in overtime.
During the silver medal ceremony, Canada’s men’s hockey team was handed small plush toys of the official “Tina the Stoat” mascot. Nathan MacKinnon and other players appeared unimpressed, since they just lost one of the biggest games of their lives.
“I don’t think it was very necessary, and it was kind of disrespectful to give grown men toys as a consolation prize after losing,” said one fan.
Still, the US team played very well in this finale, and they deserved their win. Several USA players played key roles in their victory. Connor Hellebuyck, Jack Hughes, who scored the winning goal, and Quinn Hughes, who was named the tournament’s top defenseman, were important contributors to their success.
Team USA’s goalie, Connor Hellebuyck, named the tournament’s best goaltender, basically stole the game. His performance was one of the best goaltending performances in Olympic history, stopping 41 of 42 shots. Canada mostly dominated and generated quality chances, but Hellebuyck somehow managed to prevent them from scoring. Considered the MVP of his team, one of Hellebuyck’s best saves came when he stayed patient and stopped Connor McDavid’s second-period breakaway.
On Canada’s side, the standout skaters were the tournament MVP, Connor McDavid, Macklin Celebrini, Nathan MacKinnon, and Nick Suzuki.
At 19 years old, young rising star Macklin Celebrini was a crucial asset to the team. His performance included a historic penalty shot goal against France and a total of 10 points throughout his first Olympic Games. With 5 goals in 6 games, his exceptional showing made him finish 2nd in scoring behind McDavid. Beyond his success with the San Jose Sharks, he set a record as the youngest player to make the Olympics.
Unfortunately, a significant impact was that their captain, Sidney Crosby, was missing during the final. He made the decision not to play due to a lower-body injury he sustained during the quarter-final against Czechia.
Since hockey is Canada’s national sport, all the fans had a lot of hope. In this team, we find outstanding, strong athletes full of talent, whom all supporters believed in.
Many spectators said Canada deserved the big win. They controlled most of the game and had more scoring chances, but never converted them, which made their loss very frustrating and disappointing.
“I was so sad they deserved to win after all their hard work,” said one spectator.
President Trump strongly celebrated the USA’s victory against Canada. Shortly after their win, he video-called the American players while they were in their locker room to congratulate them. Over and over, he kept telling them their performance was unbelievable.
In Trump’s call, one joke he said prompted laughter in the men’s locker room.
Later, the U.S. president invited the team to the White House to attend the 2026 State of the Union address. Only five of the 25 players didn’t go.
“I would be impeached if I failed to invite the USA women’s hockey team to the White House”. Said Trump
The women’s gold medalist, captain Hilary Knight, criticized the remark as distasteful, and it overshadowed the women’s success. Finally, the team declined his invitation due to scheduling conflicts with professional and academic obligations.
The president also posted on social media a message celebrating the team’s victory.
” We’re winning too much,” he said in his speech.
The White House published on the internet an image of an eagle attacking a goose representing both countries and mocking Canada.
This game was extremely watched, with nearly 35 million people in North America, with a peak in the U.S. of 26 million spectators.
