A major decision that will impact women’s sports in 2026, especially basketball as well as Canada, was made this weekend.
Toronto, the capital of Ontario, is now home to a new women’s team in the WNBA. The arrival of a new women’s team in Toronto marks a significant element for women’s basketball in Canada and the league itself. It demonstrates the growing popularity and expansion of women’s basketball and signifies the WNBA’s reach beyond the borders of the United States.
During a press briefing, the commissioner Cathy Engelbert with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, rapper Drake, and Raptors star Scottie Barnes in attendance, stated “I am honored to officially announce that we have awarded the 14th franchise of the WNBA to the city of Toronto”.
The team will play in an 8,000-seat arena that hosts the local professional women’s hockey league team and the Marlies from the American Hockey League. The Toronto team, whose name has yet to be revealed, will be the 14th franchise in the WNBA. This follows the announcement of the 13th team, the Golden State Valkyries, who will play in San Francisco next year.
“Women will see heroines who look like them in person and on the air throughout the summer,” praised Larry Tanenbaum.“The more people recognize the value and potential of women’s sports, the closer we will get to a more equitable future in the world of sports,” he added.
It’s fair to say that, it’s a significant step for equality and inclusion in women’s sports. Each team in the WNBA contributes to gender equality in sports, in that way, it can challenge and change societal perceptions about gender roles and capabilities. They help in breaking down stereotypes and promoting gender equality in all sectors. The more teams and professional players there are, the greater the recognition and respect for women’s sports.
Hopefully, this will inspire more young girls and women to get involved in the sport and pursue their athletic dreams.
