Over the years, many movies about Michael Jackson have been released, but none have matched the success of the biopic Michael, which now ranks as the second-highest-grossing music biopic of all time, after Freddie Mercury’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
The film lasts a little bit more than 2 hours and features around 13 of his songs.
It explores Jackson’s life from his early years to his adult years, starting with his debut with Jackson 5 — a band formed with his brothers — and concluding with his successful solo career.
Michael was portrayed by his real-life nephew, Jaafar Jackson, a casting choice that many fans praised for his amazing and spot-on performance as his uncle.
“He didn’t just imitate Michael — he actually captured his aura, expressions, energy, and stage presence in a way that felt natural and emotional.” A fan commented.
The movie was extremely well received by moonwalkers, his fans, earning 97% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. Many said that it offered a nostalgic and emotional celebration of his musical legacy.
The costumes also earned many positive reviews for their accuracy. They were made by Marci Rodgers, a costume designer, who ensured the outfits matched Jackson’s original outfits.
“My goal was to execute out of respect and honour, no matter what, be it Michael Jackson, the adult, or the Jackson 5,” Rodgers commented on Instagram.
A sequel to the movie is already in the works and is expected to be released in April 2028, covering the rest of Michael’s life. In fact, 30% of the sequel was already filmed during the first movie’s production, but was deliberately held back. Moonwalkers look forward to its release after an amazing first movie.
