When we talk about dress code, the words that come out the most are exaggerated, unfair, and sexist. The rule about the shirts having to cover the belly is the most problematic. Today’s fashion is tight shorts, shirts, and pants, but the school does not allow the students to wear them.
“I wear clothing where the top and the bottom overlap. Leaving no skin visible at the waist when the arms are at my side. A “crop top” is therefore acceptable if worn with pants that have a high enough waist to cover the entire stomach.” Said the official school dress code, which is on page six in the agenda.
Many students think this is unfair since it is mostly girls who are being warned about their outfits. Even if a boy breaks the rule, he has far fewer chances of being punished since teachers are practically not severe with them.
“Personally, I never saw a teacher inform a boy about his clothes, even if many of them don’t follow the rules. For example, they wear hats on the main floor, or they put their pants on in a way that makes their underwear clearly visible. They are rarely warned compared to girls who get cautioned all the time.” Mentioned a student after asking her how she felt about the situation.
Plus, with summer coming, the girls started wearing camisoles and shorts, which is another problem since many teachers are very strict about pants needing to reach the middle of the thigh. However, it is the fashion of the day to wear short shorts.
” At the beginning of the year, I thought that the problem would be over when I saw most students arrive in “jorts” although when the heat arrived, the problem came with it.” Affirmed by a school’s supervisor.
Many students said that how they dress is their choice and a form of freedom of expression; they think the school should let them wear what they want and what they are comfortable in.
Even tho every time we talk about dress code with a supervisor or a teacher, they always answer that if girls wear revealing clothes, it will distract others from their studies. Teachers also believe students should prepare for their future and that when they’ll have a job, they will not be allowed to wear what they want.
“It’s okay,” said a student about the situation. “There is a limit, but they should at least be stricter with the boys.”
In fact, the dress code situation is like a war between students and teachers; students want freedom of expression, but teachers want to follow the school’s rules.
