Last year, the trip to New York attracted around 144 people, including secondary five students, for their last school trip. Students in the secondary two art concentration and those in the secondary four English concentration also went to the Big Apple.
The trips to the U.S. have been cancelled since the school board strongly recommended not to go because of the commercial tension. The decision was taken last spring in response to the trade war launched against Canada by the Trump administration.
It is a very popular trip among the students, since it is a fun destination and a rare occasion. They were supposed to go with friends, but what do students think about the school board’s decision?
“I am disappointed because I wanted to go to New York .” Another mentioned, “I think it is very disappointing because we tought that we would go to New York and other years it is always in Toronto or other places in Canada. The other years before did it too and now, because of what is happening, we are punished.” said secondary five students, after asking them how they felt about the situation.
Some of the students agree with the school board’s decision: “I agree with the decision because, as you know, the political situation doesn’t allow us to do it, because that would be crazy.” Although others think that it isn’t a valid reason, they should go anyway.
We can conclude that the cancellation of that very popular trip to New York disappointed many people, though some would have made a different decision.
